This chapter has a talking fish that saves Hugo from drowning. And there's a sentence in the first chapter that's highly grammatically suspect. It goes gerund, past-tense, past-tense, gerund when talking about the chain. It was confusing and I know I'm not a writer but I'm pretty sure you can't do that.
Um what else. The fish tells a long story about how a statue of a hand came to exist at the bottom of the ocean. Not sure it's that important.
Also I looked up pitures of oarfish on Google and can I just say gross?!?!
